It its beautiful, but do you really need to state the obvious at the end of the introductory sentence and then cap it with cheesy dotdotdots?

The curves the river forms are called ox bows

  3. By Kyle on Feb 18, 2008 | Reply

Eventually, the river will erode through the rock and will become straight. The curves will become ox bow lakes.

  4. By Ror on Feb 18, 2008 | Reply

The “dotdotdots” are called an Ellipsis.

  5. By Alex on Feb 18, 2008 | Reply

Sean no they are not, they are called meanders, Ox Bow lakes are formed from meanders but there are none in that picture

elipse. the dots are called an elipse. It’s amazing just how necessary proper names are for things…

    Sure it’s California? Utah maybe?

  8. By unTECHy on Feb 18, 2008 | Reply

It looks like Lake Powell. In any event, it looks like a place I’d like to fish!

  9. By Tobiah on Feb 18, 2008 | Reply

    Mike, it’s called an ‘elipsis’.

Mother nature may have created the canon but it was man that filled it with water. Good or bad?

Oh wow, that is beautiful. But you should check out some of the scenery we have here all over in CO. :D

  12. By Karen on Feb 19, 2008 | Reply

Very beautiful scenery but having vacationed in Utah not too long ago, it looks more like Utah.

  13. By Matt on Feb 19, 2008 | Reply

This is Lake Powell in south eastern Utah, several hundred miles from California, but you were close! (from a planetary perspective)

  14. By Gaz on Feb 19, 2008 | Reply

Yea, I was going to suggest Lake Powell, very nice place.

The bends in the river are called meanders, eventually after enough time they break through the bend and go straight, the remnant meanders that remain are no longer connected to the river and become what is known as an ox box lake.

    “ellipsis” (3 full stops)
    “ellipses” (plural of “ellipsis)

  16. By Schemilix on Feb 21, 2008 | Reply

Mike, an elipse is a mathematical figure.

And guys, stop bitching. Ribbu could have said ‘God created it’ and then the shit would hit the fan. It was asentiment to show their appreciation, don;t go jumping s/he just because of that.

On a more positive note, beautiful picture, shame about the boat… I don’t like living objects in my landscape pictures, or man made things, spoils the serenity. But still, it’s lovely.

you people bicker about some lame ass shit

  18. By SpamtheMan on Feb 21, 2008 | Reply

It is Lake Powell. A sad story really. John Wesley Powell was one of the founders of the USGS. He loved that particular valley and wrote about it extensively. When the river was dammed the resultant lake which destroyed the valley was ironically named after him. I suppose that instead of spending any time finding out about how awesome Powell was (exploring the west with only one arm and founding the USGS and all) everyone will, instead, critisize my use of the word “ironically” or my punctuation. Sad really…

“THERE” called dots or is that “they are” called dots? Is that California, I don’t think so. Okay, great photo, and clueless people. Now, clueless people that don’t believe in God. Still a great photo.

This can’t be in the USA. There are no dams, oil derricks, strip mines, pipelines, overhead electrical transmission lines, skyscrapers or logging roads. How can you expect us to believe that there are pristine areas in the USA? This must be in a foreign country or a plastic model.
Maybe it’s on the Moon. As if we ever landed there.

  32. By jstbrsn on Feb 27, 2008 | Reply

This has got to be on Mars. It is too pristine to be located any where in the US. There are no houses, condos, and mega- malls in sight.

  33. By MoveOn on Feb 28, 2008 | Reply

    Beautiful, wherever it is.

First, not all of California is tarnished with skyscrapers and mega malls, it looks like Red Rock Canyon to me, which is actually in California. And Please, don’t judge the state on what southern California has created.

  38. By 3l1t3 on Feb 29, 2008 | Reply

For all of you saying there is not any pristine areas in the US, get a clue. Most of this country in the western mid and upper sections all the way to lets say New Mexico, is still pretty untouched for the most part. Try to say that about China. Or any other over populated country. Just because you idiots from other countries see splaces like New York and LA does not mean our entire country is that congested. Get a clue you retards!
